On Fire - Updates

Click HERE to read the latest news on the Southern California fires.

The fire that broke out yesterday near work is still burning, but it's going away from us. Today a coworker showed up late because the hill next to his house was caught on fire in the middle of the night. They could see the fire from one of their bedrooms. They packed up their cars and were ready to leave. The fire was put out in a few hours thanks to the brave firefighters. They didn't get any sleep, of course.

This afternoon I could hear several of helicopters flying above us. Apparently something else is burning on the other side of our sky. In a few hours, the sky's filled with smoke again and the sun turned orange.

All the schools around here are still closed today and might still be closed tomorrow. Originally they said the winds would die down today, but now it looks like we will have another windy day tomorrow. Gosh I really hope these winds would go away.

Yesterday there were a quarter of million evacuees and today the number doubled. It jumped to over half a million people. I talked to a few friends from San Diego (which is worst hit by the fires) and they said that the school is canceled the whole week for them. They also heard that they could lose electricity and water soon, so they headed to the grocery store nearby only to find out that all the water was sold out. This is like a war zone around here.

I also heard on the news today that there's a suspicious white pick-up truck full of guys that stopped by houses left behind and stole people's possessions. What kind of human are they to take advantage of other peoples' miseries? If they have extra time and energy, they should help fight the fires.

I found out: As of 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, October 23, the Wild Animal Park has sustained some fire and wind damage to some facilities, but the animals continue to be okay. Spot fires are still turning up and are being extinguished. A small core of employees are on hand to care for the animals while others are assisting with fire and wind damage. All the California condors remain safely at the fire-safe Paul Harter Veterinary Medical Center. However, one of the empty condor breeding facilities has been lost to fire. Again, the condors were already safely housed at the veterinary facility along with education animals. A storage facility containing Festival of Lights event materials was also burned. Winds have damaged trees throughout the Park, but again the animals and exhibits are weathering the storm.

I'm hearing this from the other side of the world... yes we do have wildfires here (but only in high summer) NOTHING like on the scale of yours or Australia's...
I mean they said some pretty obvious sounding things like "if you're going to live in such areas build your house of BRICKS"... coming rrom a country where if a house is NOT made out of bricks or stone it seems like a movie-set house I can thoroughly sympathize with THAT view... I hope this all burns itself out soon.

the fires have been extra bad this time, no doubt. Hope you are ok.

that is horrible that anyone would consider stealing in a situation like this.

I hope it gets better for all of you to the south real soon. You know its not good when you can see the smoke from those fires and they are at least 100 miles from me. The smoke was coming over the mountains to our south today. Thats not a good sign. The wind can only go on for so long and it shall get easier for those firefighters once it does die down.
And to those that take advantage of situations like this to steal from others. What comes around goes around is all I have to say....they will get payback.
